How our tools work
Every tool runs inside your browser with the Web Audio API. When a tool uses your microphone or a file, the sound is analysed on your own phone or computer and is not uploaded. The pitch tools share one tested detection engine (the McLeod pitch method), so a note reads the same in the tuner, the vocal range test and the pitch detector. You can read how we test accuracy in our methodology, see how real-time pitch detection works, and follow every update in the changelog.
For the best reading, use a quiet room, sing or play one note at a time and keep the microphone about 20 to 30 cm away. If a tool cannot hear you, allow microphone access in the browser bar or see troubleshooting.

Frequently asked questions
Are these music tools really free?
Yes. All 34 tools are free to use with no sign-up, no trial and no limit on how often you use them.
Do the tools work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. They work in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers. The first time a tool needs the microphone, your browser asks for permission; tap Allow.
Is my voice or audio uploaded?
No. Microphone sound and the files you open are analysed on your own device and are not sent to our server. When a tool lets you record a take to play back, that recording stays in your browser.
What is the difference between a pitch detector and a tuner?
A pitch detector tells you which note you are singing or playing and shows how the pitch moves over time. A tuner is made for adjusting an instrument: it knows the target strings or notes and tells you whether to tune up or down.
Why does the note sometimes jump an octave?
Musical sounds contain overtones as well as the main note. With a weak, breathy or noisy sound, a detector can lock onto an overtone for a moment. Sing or play one clear, steady note in a quiet room and the reading settles.
What is the difference between BPM Detector and Tempo Tapper?
BPM Detector listens to a song or file and finds the beat for you. Tempo Tapper measures the tempo from your own taps, which is handy when the song is playing in another app or only in your head. Both can show half or double time, so check the result against the beat you feel.
Does a vocal range result tell me my voice type?
Not on its own. Range shows the notes you reached today. Voice type also depends on where your voice feels comfortable, its tone and where it changes register, which is why the Voice Type Test combines several measurements.
