Audio File Pitch Detector

Find the pitch of any recording. Upload an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC file and this free audio file pitch detector draws its pitch curve, lists every note with its start time, length and how many cents it is sharp or flat, and shows the lowest and highest notes and the notes used most.

Play the file back at full or half speed and the display follows along. The file never leaves your device.

How to Detect the Pitch of an Audio File

  1. Choose a file or drop it on the box. MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC work in current browsers, up to 50 MB and 10 minutes.
  2. Pick what the recording is (any, voice, low, high or bass) if you know it: this keeps the reading in the right octave.
  3. Wait a moment while the file is analysed in your browser. A 3-minute song takes a few seconds on a phone.
  4. Read the pitch curve, the note list and the summary. Press play and the big note shows the pitch at that moment; click the curve or any row in the list to jump there.
  5. Slow the playback to 0.5× to hear fast passages, then copy the notes or download them as a CSV file.

What the Results Show

ResultWhat it tells you
Pitch curveThe pitch of the recording over its whole length on piano-key lanes; gaps are silence or sounds without a clear pitch
Every note, in orderStart time, note name, frequency in Hz, cents sharp or flat and length, for each note held at least 100 ms
Lowest and highest noteThe range of the melody: useful to check whether a song fits your voice
Most used noteThe note heard for the longest time, often the key note or the fifth of the key
In tuneThe share of the recording within ±10 cents of a note
Which notes are used mostA bar chart of the twelve note names by time: the tallest bars usually belong to the song’s key

Which Files Work Best

  • One voice or instrument at a time: an a cappella vocal, a solo instrument, a voice memo or a practice recording.
  • Isolated vocals: for a finished song, separate the vocal track first with a stem splitter, then analyse the vocal.
  • Clean recordings: little reverb, no loud background music; chords and full mixes have no single pitch to read.
  • Mono or stereo: both work; stereo files are mixed to mono for the analysis.

How pitch is found in MP3, WAV and M4A files, and why compressed files still give accurate notes, is explained in how to detect pitch in MP3, WAV and M4A files.

Find the Notes of a Song or Melody

The note list turns a recording into the notes of its melody: copy it into your notation app, use it to learn a tune by ear, or check which notes a singer hits. The lowest and highest notes tell you the range of the melody, so you can compare it with your own voice and decide whether to change the key. To find the key of the whole song, including its chords, use the song key finder; to turn a melody into a MIDI file, use the pitch to MIDI converter.

How Accurate Is It?

The detector uses the same McLeod pitch method as our live pitch detector. In our tests a synthetic melody of C4, E4, G4 and C5 was found exactly, with the right start times and 0 cents error, and steady test tones from C2 to C7 were within ±3 cents in 484 of 488 cases. On real recordings the main limits are the recording itself: reverb, breathy singing, vibrato and backing music can blur a note or shift it between two lanes. Every frame’s pitch value is included in the pitch data CSV if you want to check it yourself. Exact note frequencies are listed in the musical note frequency chart.

Private by Design

The audio is decoded and analysed by your browser on your own phone or computer. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared, and the results disappear when you leave the page unless you download them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the pitch of an MP3?

Choose the MP3 file above. The detector shows its pitch curve and lists every note with its time and frequency.

Can it find the notes of a song on YouTube or Spotify?

Only from a file on your device that you are allowed to use. Save or record the audio, ideally the vocal on its own, and open that file here.

Why are some notes missing?

Very short notes, whispered or breathy sounds and notes covered by chords or drums can’t be read as a single pitch. Try “Shortest note: 60 ms” in Settings for fast passages.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 50 MB and 10 minutes. For longer recordings, cut out the part you need first.
