Online Pitch Shifter and Pitch Changer

Change the pitch of any song, voice memo or backing track in seconds. This free online pitch shifter moves audio up or down by semitones and cents without changing its speed, or changes pitch and speed together like a record for nightcore and slowed versions. Pick a new key, compare the original and the shifted version with the A/B switch, then download a WAV. Your audio never leaves your device.

How to Change the Pitch of a Song Online

  1. Press Open audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC, up to 100 MB and 15 minutes) or drop the file on the tool. You can also record your voice or try the demo melody.
  2. Turn the semitone dial or press − and +. Each step is one semitone; 12 steps is one octave. Use Fine tune for cents.
  3. Choose Keep speed to change only the pitch, or Pitch + speed for the record-player effect. The Tempo slider changes speed separately.
  4. Press play and use the A/B switch to compare the original and the shifted version at the same point. Drag across the waveform to loop a passage.
  5. Press Download WAV. The file keeps the original sample rate and stereo, and its name says what you changed, for example song_-2st.wav.

Semitones and Cents: How Much to Shift

A semitone is one piano key, the smallest step in Western music. A cent is one hundredth of a semitone, used for fine tuning. The tool shows the exact frequency ratio, so you can see that +12 semitones doubles every frequency. More about this unit in what cents are in music tuning.

ShiftFrequency ratioWhat you hear
+/− 100 cents (1 semitone)×1.0595 / ×0.9439The next key up or down: a small but clear change
−2 semitones×0.8909A whole step lower: a common change for singers
+3 semitones×1.1892A minor third higher: A becomes C
+/− 12 semitones×2 / ×0.5One octave: same notes, much higher or lower
−31.77 cents×0.9818A4 = 440 Hz becomes 432 Hz

Change the Key of a Song (Transpose Audio)

To transpose a song, you shift every note by the same number of semitones. Set the original key and the new key in the key helper and the dial is set for you: D major to C major is −2 semitones, A to C is +3 (or −9 if you choose Down). Moving the dial also shows the new key, so the tool doubles as a song key changer.

Don’t know the key? Upload the song to the song key finder first, or read how to find the key of a song by ear. If a song is too high or too low for you, compare its highest and lowest notes with your own range: the audio file pitch detector shows the notes of a vocal track, and the vocal range test shows yours. Most singers only need 1 to 3 semitones.

Keep the Speed, or Change Pitch and Speed Together

Keep speed is a true pitch shifter: the song stays the same length and tempo while the key moves. Use it for singing, practising an instrument or matching a sample to your track. The separate Tempo control (50–200%) speeds the song up or slows it down without changing the key, so the tool also works as a key and BPM changer: type the song’s BPM and it shows the new BPM.

Pitch + speed works like a record or tape played faster or slower: higher means faster and shorter. It is the classic sound of nightcore and slowed edits, and it has no processing artefacts at all because nothing is stretched.

How many semitones is nightcore? A typical nightcore edit plays the song about 25% faster, which raises the pitch by about 3.9 semitones (most edits use 3 to 4). The Nightcore preset does exactly that: pitch + speed ×1.25. The Slowed preset plays at ×0.85, about 2.8 semitones lower.

Want the exact tempo before and after? Measure it with the BPM detector, or tap along with the tempo tapper.

Convert a Song to 432 Hz

Songs are normally tuned to A4 = 440 Hz. To hear a song at A4 = 432 Hz, lower it by 31.77 cents: press the 432 Hz tuning preset. Every note moves by the same ratio (432 ÷ 440), the tempo stays the same and the download is named song_432Hz.wav. Whether 432 Hz sounds better is a matter of taste, not science; 432 Hz vs 440 Hz explains the history and the claims. For the frequency of every note at either tuning, see the note to frequency converter.

Change the Pitch of a Voice

Record your voice or open a voice memo, set Best for to Voice, speech, solo instruments and shift it. As a rough guide, a male voice sounds female at about +4 to +5 semitones and a female voice sounds male at −4 to −5. Big shifts also move the voice’s resonances, so +12 gives the familiar chipmunk sound and −12 a very dark, slow-sounding voice; shifts of 1 to 3 semitones sound most natural.

How It Works and How Accurate It Is

For Keep speed the tool uses a phase vocoder with phase locking: it stretches the sound in time by the pitch ratio and then resamples it with a high-quality filter, so the length stays the same and the pitch moves exactly. All channels share the same phase changes, so the stereo image stays in place. A long song is processed in small pieces with a progress bar, and the page stays usable while it works.

In our tests a 440 Hz tone came out at 880.0 Hz (+12), 220.0 Hz (−12), 523.2 Hz (+3) and 432.0 Hz (−31.77 cents), all within 0.01%, with the length unchanged. Nightcore mode shortened a 6-second file to 4.80 seconds, as it should. A 3-minute stereo song took about 5 seconds on a laptop. Simple music and voices sound cleanest; dense mixes with drums can sound slightly softer after large shifts, so try Drums and beats for rhythmic material. The link between frequency ratios and notes is explained in frequency vs note vs octave.

Private, Free and No Sign-Up

Your audio is decoded and processed by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and there is no account and no watermark. It works on phones too; very long files need more memory, so shorter files are quicker on older phones. After shifting, you can sing along and check your notes with the live pitch detector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the pitch without changing the speed?

Yes. Keep speed is on by default: the key changes and the tempo and length stay the same.

How do I lower the key of a song for singing?

Open the song, press − once or twice (1–2 semitones lower), compare with A/B and download. Or set the original and new key in the key helper.

What is a pitch shifter in cents?

Cents are hundredths of a semitone. Use Fine tune for shifts smaller than a semitone, for example −31.77 cents for 432 Hz or to match a slightly out-of-tune recording.

Can I change the pitch of a YouTube or Spotify song?

Only from an audio file on your device that you are allowed to use. The tool does not download from streaming sites.

Which file do I get?

A 16-bit WAV at the original sample rate, in stereo if the original was stereo. Convert it to MP3 in any audio app if you need a smaller file.
