Pitch to MIDI Converter Online

Turn a melody into MIDI notes. This free pitch to MIDI converter listens to your voice, a hum, a whistle or one instrument through the microphone, or opens an audio file, and writes the melody as notes in a piano roll. Fix any note, quantize the timing, snap to a key and download a MIDI file for your DAW or notation app.

How to Convert Pitch to MIDI

  1. Press Record and sing, hum, whistle or play one note at a time. Notes appear in the piano roll while you perform. Press Stop recording when you finish. Or press Open audio file for an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC recording, or try the demo.
  2. The converter analyses the whole take and lists every note with its start, length and loudness. It also estimates the tempo and the key.
  3. Press Play to hear the notes. Tick Play the original audio too to compare them with your recording.
  4. Fix what you want: drag a note up or down to change its pitch, sideways to move it, or drag its right edge to change its length. Delete or merge notes, double-click to add one, and undo any step.
  5. Choose a quantize grid, a key, transposition and the MIDI options, then press Download MIDI file. Drop the .mid file into any DAW.

Tip: for a clean result, record in a quiet room, sing each note clearly on a vowel such as “la” or “da”, and leave a tiny gap between repeated notes. The consonant tells the converter where a new note starts.

The converter follows one melody line at a time (monophonic pitch to MIDI). To find the chords of a song instead, use the chord progression finder.

Settings for a Clean MIDI File

SettingWhat it doesWhen to change it
Shortest noteIgnores notes shorter than 50–300 msRaise it if you get tiny extra notes; lower it for fast runs
Pitch smoothingEvens out wobbles and vibrato before notes are cutOff keeps every slide; Strong suits a very wide vibrato
Tempo and quantizeSnaps starts and lengths to 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 notes or triplets at the tempo shownType your song’s tempo if the estimate is wrong, or use the click track while recording
Snap to keyMoves notes outside the key to the nearest note of the scaleUse the detected key, or pick one of the 24 keys
Transpose and octaveShifts every note by up to ±24 semitones or ±2 octavesMove a hummed line into the range of your synth or instrument
Pitch bendKeeps the exact tuning: per note, or the full pitch curve with vibrato and slidesLeave off for clean notes; use the full curve for an expressive synth lead
VelocityLouder notes get a higher MIDI velocityChoose Fixed if your instrument sounds uneven

Pitch bend uses a range of ±2 semitones, and a cent is one hundredth of a semitone, so a note sung 25 cents sharp is written as a small bend up. Not sure which key to snap to? Type a few notes into the scale finder.

Editing the Piano Roll

  • Select: click or tap a note; the inspector shows its name, bar position, length and velocity.
  • Pitch: drag up or down, use the ▲ ▼ buttons, or the arrow keys (Shift + arrow = one octave).
  • Timing: drag the note sideways, drag its right edge, or use Shorter and Longer.
  • Clean up: Delete removes a note, Merge with next joins a note split in two, and double-clicking an empty spot adds a note.
  • Navigate: drag empty space or use the slider to scroll, − and + to zoom, and click the bar numbers to play from there.
  • Undo (Ctrl+Z) steps back through every edit. The light blue line shows the pitch you actually sang.

What Is in the MIDI File

You get a Standard MIDI File (format 1, 480 ticks per quarter note) with the tempo, the time signature, an instrument (piano, choir, flute, strings, synth lead or bass) and one note-on and note-off per note with its velocity. It opens in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Cubase, Reaper, MuseScore and any other MIDI program. Export CSV saves the note list for a spreadsheet, and Copy note names copies a line such as “C4 E4 G4 C5”. More on using pitch data in a studio is in how pitch detection helps in music production.

Frequency to MIDI Note Numbers

MIDI numbers the notes from 0 to 127 in semitones: 60 is middle C (C4) and 69 is A4 at 440 Hz. To convert a frequency to MIDI, use MIDI = 69 + 12 × log₂(f / 440) and round to the nearest whole number; what is left over is the offset in cents. The line under the tool does this for you.

NoteMIDI numberFrequency (Hz)

G467392.00
A469440.00
C572523.25
A581880.00
C81084186.01

A frequency between two notes rounds to the closer one: 445 Hz is MIDI 69 plus 20 cents, and 452 Hz is still MIDI 69 (A4) plus 47 cents, because A♯4 is only closer from 452.89 Hz upwards. For the reverse direction use the note to frequency converter, and all notes are listed in the musical note frequency chart.

How the Converter Hears Your Melody

Every 20 milliseconds the converter measures the fundamental frequency with the McLeod pitch method, the same engine as our live pitch detector. It smooths the pitch line, groups steady stretches into notes, and uses the loudness curve to place each note start precisely and to split repeated notes. In our tests with a C major scale, a sung melody with vibrato and scoops, staccato notes, a melody with rests and a fast whistled run, it found all 57 notes with the right pitch and a mean start error of about 5 ms. The tempo estimate was within 1 BPM of the true tempo for all five melodies. Everything runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this pitch to MIDI converter free?

Yes. There is no account, no limit on the number of files and no watermark. Recordings can be up to 5 minutes and files up to 10 minutes long.

Can I convert a full song or a piano recording to MIDI?

Only one melody line at a time. A mix with drums, chords or several voices has no single pitch, so the result would be messy. Use a vocal stem or a solo recording.

Why are some notes an octave too high or too low?

Breathy singing and very low notes can have a weak fundamental. Pick the matching Range in Detection, then fix single notes with Octave + or Octave −. Whistling sits about two octaves above the voice, so shift it down with the Octave setting.

Why did one long note turn into two?

A slide, a big vibrato or a short break in the sound can split it. Raise Pitch smoothing or Shortest note, or select the first part and press Merge with next.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox. Allow the microphone when asked. On a small screen tap a note and use the buttons under the piano roll to edit it.
